Sorn Castle overlooks the River Ayr and sits just outside the village of Sorn in East Ayrshire. The castle comprises a medieval tower house, which has been extended over the years, and was remodelled in the Scots Baronial style by David Bryce in the 1860s. The castle is protected as a Category A listed building.

The castle driveway was extensively damaged by storm water during a torrential summer storm on the 5th July 2012. The downpour caused tonnes of debris to be washed from the B7037 and B743 through the castle gates and along the drive, ripping up the existing road surface as it went.

The road was later reconstructed with:

  • 650m of carrier drain
  • 26nr new gullies
  • 2,000m2 of road surfacing

The photographs shown above were taken before and after the works were carried out.

The works involved:

  • cutting of tie-in joints at each end of the drive
  • mechanically sweeping to remove leaf litter and debris from the existing road surface
  • application of tack coat
  • overlaying the existing road surface with 40mm of AC10 dense surface course

This John Adam designed elliptical bridge was built to give the traveler an early sight of Dumfries House on their approach. A stand of Wellingtonias have since blocked such a view, but the bridge itself is still an outstandingly beautiful and important structure.

It is Category A listed and had previously been damaged both by accident, and more recently, vandalism.

Working in conjunction with the Client, Engineer, Builder and Historic Scotland, a design for the surfacing of the refurbished structure was developed with the works being carried out prior to the opening of the Walled Garden by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II on the 2nd July 2014.
